CBD Makes Its Way to Auto Industry, As Porsche Releases Hemp-Bodied Car

The CBD industry is getting increasingly more creative with the way that hemp is being introduced to different situations. Hemp has been used for clothing accessories, soothing sore muscles, and even relaxation, but Porsche’s new race car is taking it a step further, using hemp to create its body.

The new race care, which is being called the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, uses an organic fiber mix to create the composite doors. The mix includes both hemp and flax, eliminating carbon fiber that are usually used for the reinforcement of polymer. According to information from Porsche, the stiffness and the weight are about the same as what carbon fiber offers, but the use of organic ingredients like hemp brings an eco-friendlier quality to the car.

Even with this innovation, Porsche is surprisingly not the first automaker that has developed a vehicle’s body around this concept. Henry Ford uses the cellulose from hemp to create a plastic body prototype at the start of the 1940s. the plastic also used wheat and soybeans, but there is no information about the exact formula used, which left the industry to create their own current version.

Along with the lessened weight, the Clubsport includes:

  • 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission
  • Roll cage
  • Fuel cell
  • 425 hp 3.8-liter flat-six engine
  • Racing breaks and suspension
  • Additional equipment for track use

Currently, there are two options available for customers – a Trackday model for $150,000 and a Competition model for enhanced racing for $175,000.

So far, despite the application to these options, Porsche has not shown the intention of applying the material to a street-legal production car. However, their venture into better sustainability would bring more reliability and a better reputation to the environmentally positive reputation of the electric vehicles coming on the market.
