Published

on

Americans for Safe Access’s (ASA) mission is to safeguard that there is safe and legal access to cannabis for the purpose of research and therapeutic use. Founded in 2002 by Steph Sherer, a cannabis patient, the organization has grown to have over 100,000 members in all 50 states.

The organization is comprised of patients, scientists, medical professionals, and citizens who are looking to help promote the organization’s goals. With the work the organization does, the barriers to access – such as policies, politics, and laws – may be adequately combated against.

According to the organization, its goal of promoting safe and legal access to CBD entails:

  • Promoting recognition of cannabis as a legal medicine by international, federal, and state laws
  • Recommendations by medical professionals stating that cannabis is a therapeutic option
  • Issuance of information to patients and caregivers concerning CBD so that they can make informed decision
  • Incorporation of a diverse group of products and better delivery methods
  • Better labels on CBD products so that patients experience more transparency and understanding of what they are buying
  • Coverage by insurance for those who would like to use cannabis as a treatment option

ASA has had several successes, such as:

  • Occupying a place concerning policy related to CBD as a medical option
  • Altering dialog concerning medical CBD
  • Promoting passage of state, local, and federal laws
  • Fighting and winning in state and federal courts to promote access to CBD
  • Providing legal and medical education to stakeholders
  • Bringing CBD into herbal pharmacopoeia
  • Developing a Cannabis and Cannabinoid Institute
  • Trained patients to promote access to CBD
  • Founding education programs for interested individuals
